Mentally Prepare for Marine Boot Camp

Long before arriving at Marine Boot Camp it’s well advised to mentally prepare yourself for the imminent 12 week grueling training period, and mentally there is no better way to prepare for what you will soon to go through than to try and simulate the environment for a period of time before you start your real life training.

Physical training is relatively easy to simulate, although it takes a mountain of self discipline to get up at 5.30 in the morning to go for a 3 mile jog almost every day. It’s the mental aspect of Marine Corps boot camp which is more difficult to prepare for as there is no real way to simulate a raw beef eating Marine Drill Instructor roaring at the top of his lungs not three inches from your face, how you are the scum of the earth and how in his opinion you are lower on the food chain than cockroach crap!

While at Marine Boot Camp your drill instructors will play head games relentlessly and these head games are designed to stress recruits to and beyond breaking point.

To help you cope with these head games you need to realize and appreciate what your Drill Instructors are trying to do, and that is to mentally condition you and prepare you for active deployment and to help you develop a high degree of mental toughness, and mentally equip you for any mission you’re assigned to as an Elite Fighting Soldier.

You could say it’s the most extreme and testing form of ‘tough love’ you well ever encounter!

A good way to mentally prepare for Marine Boot Camp is to study some Marine history, especially some historic battles and conflicts where the Marine Corps featured in a pivotal role. Also study the history surrounding the myth and legend of King Leonidas of Sparta, in particular the battle of Thermopylae. There’s a good chance you will hear some of your instructors refer to King Leonidas, and they may well ask you ”What would King Leonidas do in your situation?”

So it’s good to know what the hell your instructor is talking about in reference to King Leonidas and I advise you to really draw some affiliation to this legendary Spartan King and the history of the Spartan Soldier which draws many similarities to the Marine Corps way of life and the Code every Marine lives by.

Learn all you can about Leonidas King of Sparta and try to emulate this Legendary Kings’ dogged determination, dedication and unwavering sense of honor and loyalty because the Marine Corps is much like King Leonidas’s Elite Spartan Army. Whenever you are nearing breaking point, ask yourself; what would King Leonidas do in this situation?

Happy Soldiering!

What to Learn to Prepare for Marine Boot Camp

There is a list of essential information that you need to learn when joining the Marine Corps.

  • US Marine Corps History
  • Marine Hym
  • Uniform Code of Military Justice
  • Military and USMC Ranks
  • 11 Orders of a Sentry

Not only should you prepare for Marine Boot Camp physically but mentally you need to be prepared.

You need to prepare yourself to deal with your Drill Instructors mind games. You must learn to master the mental Marine Corps mind preparation. Though ‘mind preparation' is infinitely vague so let me explain a bit further.

Learn to control your emotions, as a Marine you will be expected to make difficult decisions under very stressful and seemingly chaotic situations. Your instructors will test to see how well you operate under such conditions and will try and make you ‘freak out’. At all time remain cool and calm and keep a level head, learn to control fear and the affects of stress.

Remember, your drill instructors are there to test you; they want to see where your breaking point is, be aware of this! Your Drill Instructor will try to scare you, stress you and ultimately break you. They will play mind games and attempt to weaken you, at times they will single you out and they will try and seek any apparent weakness that you may have, so it is very important that you don’t show any and even better not have any!

Realistically, to prepare for Marine boot camp you really need to challenge yourself physically and mentally beyond what you think are your accepted limits.

If you prepare for Marine boot camp this way, you will survive Marine boot camp that much easier!

So the best possible thing to prepare for Marine boot camp is start right now! Every day you waste not preparing will make it all that much harder.

How to Prepare for Marine Boot Camp

One the best ways to prepare for boot camp straight away is to bulk up, start getting used to intense physical activity, become accustomed to very early mornings and long days. The quicker you start becoming accustomed to getting up at 5am the easier you will make it for yourself later on and it won’t be so much of a shock.

Start by going getting up at 5am every morning and going for a 3-5 mile run on alternate days, join a gym and do pyramid pull-ups, sit-ups, leg raises, hello dolly’s any and all type of ab work!

Go on bush hikes, without weights to start with then with a pack with a few bottles of water or books and gradually add more weight.

Be sure to do lots of leg work at the gym, like dead lifts and leg extensions and squats, because you’re going to be required to lift and move a lot of stuff around in Boot Camp and your legs need to be strong to prevent you from using your back and getting injured.

You don’t want to physically unprepared so prepare for boot camp as soon as you can!
Get used to doing push ups, because you will be doing lots of them. Try to work up to 300 to 500 a day. If you can punch out 100 plus push ups when you first arrive at boot camp you can avoid a lot of negative focus on your Drill Instructors during your stay at boot camp.

Keep in mind while you prepare for boot camp that you will soon undergo some of the most challenging training a human being can endure, it will help to develop the mindset of a true Spartan while you prepare for boot camp. The more conditioned you are before you arrive, the better chances you have at graduating.

Remember, when you arrive at boot camp, the Drill Instructors job is to try his best to weaken you. So if you have a weakness, focus on it and make it your strength!

Prepare for Boot Camp Now

If you have decided to join the Marines, good for you! Many have tried and many have failed.

Do not be one of those failures!

You know the saying, better to have tried and failed, than not have tried all!

Well that’s bullshit as far as the Marine Corps is concerned.

Those that have failed Marine Corp Boot Camp carry the burden of failure for the rest of their lives, it can be soul destroying. If you have an inkling that you might not cut it, any doubt whatsoever don’t enlist. My advice, prepare for boot camp now!

But for those brave enough to accept a life of selfless service and unwavering honor don’t entertain the prospect of failure for one second, for a true Marine never, ever throws in the towel.

The whole objective of Marine training is to simulate some of the worst, most inhospitable combat situations imaginable. Your instructor’s aim is to condition your mind and body to a degree of toughness and sheer determination you never knew existed, so you have the best possible chance of surviving the worst of combat situations, complete your mission and god willing, return home in one piece.

This is why they will constantly test you; put you under all kinds of pressure. Your instructors will search for your weaknesses, play mind games and stress you physically as well as mentally and emotionally.

Their aim!

To create an Elite soldier, with the reputation second to none for any combat unit anywhere in the world. My advice prepare for boot camp soldier!

Even if you prepare for boot camp it will be extremely challenging and difficult, if you don’t prepare your chances of graduating are minimal at best.
